Pre-Meal Breathwork Practice

Pranayama, or breathwork practices, can be powerful ways to help relax the nervous system and get present for a few moments. In pranayama practices, we focus on the breath. We may change the breath to lengthen the inhale or exhale, focus on where breath goes in the body, or focus the breath in other ways.

Some people find breathwork a less overwhelming practice than a quiet meditation, as the mind can focus on the breath coming in and out or a counted breath. It is active, as you are doing something with your breath instead of sitting in stillness. While both can be great tools, breathwork may be a good starting place if meditation has felt challenging for you in the past.

This is a short meditation that uses a 5 count inhale and 5 count exhale. It’s designed to do right before a meal if you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, but you can use it anytime you’d like to pause and focus on your breath for a few minutes.

Enjoy!
