What is HAES®?

HAES stands for Health at Every Size. It’s a weight-inclusive approach to health that focuses on healthy behaviors rather than the number on the scale. It promotes respect for all body sizes, intuitive eating, joyful movement, and challenging weight stigma.

HAES principles in patient care:

Health at Every Size (HAES) principles in patient care emphasize a weight-inclusive, compassionate, and individualized approach to health and well-being. Here are the core HAES principles applied in patient care:

  1. Weight Inclusivity – Recognize and respect body diversity. Avoid weight-focused interventions and instead support patients in pursuing health behaviors without the expectation of weight loss.

  2. Health Enhancement – Support holistic well-being by improving access to healthcare, reducing weight stigma, and focusing on health-promoting behaviors rather than weight-based outcomes.

  3. Respectful Care – Provide patient-centered care that acknowledges and challenges weight bias, ensuring that all individuals receive compassionate and equitable treatment regardless of body size.

  4. Eating for Well-Being – Encourage flexible, attuned eating based on internal cues of hunger, fullness, and satisfaction, rather than external rules or restrictions.

  5. Life-Enhancing Movement – Promote enjoyable, accessible movement that supports physical and mental health rather than exercise solely for weight control or aesthetic goals.

This training includes a 45-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. At this time, we are unable to provide Continuing Education (CE) credits for this training. There is no minimum participant requirement, and sessions can be conducted either online or in person. Additionally, if your group is interested in multiple training sessions, we can customize the program to extend beyond the standard one-hour format.

FAQ about HAES Nutrition Therapy

Is HAES backed by science?

Yes. Research supports that HAES can and does improve holistic health as well as health markers markers like blood pressure, cholesterol, and self-esteem, without focusing on weight loss. It also improves mental and phsycial health.

Is HAES anti-weight loss?

No. HAES isn’t anti-weight loss, it’s anti-weight obsession. It focuses on behaviors over outcomes, letting your body settle where it feels best.

What are the HAES models?

HAES models vary, but all share a few basics: body respect, eating for well-being, joyful movement, and challenging weight stigma.

Why should I work with a HAES dietitian?

A HAES dietitian helps you focus on health without shame or restriction. They support sustainable habits, not quick fixes.
