HAES principles in patient care:
Health at Every Size (HAES) principles in patient care emphasize a weight-inclusive, compassionate, and individualized approach to health and well-being. Here are the core HAES principles applied in patient care:
Weight Inclusivity – Recognize and respect body diversity. Avoid weight-focused interventions and instead support patients in pursuing health behaviors without the expectation of weight loss.
Health Enhancement – Support holistic well-being by improving access to healthcare, reducing weight stigma, and focusing on health-promoting behaviors rather than weight-based outcomes.
Respectful Care – Provide patient-centered care that acknowledges and challenges weight bias, ensuring that all individuals receive compassionate and equitable treatment regardless of body size.
Eating for Well-Being – Encourage flexible, attuned eating based on internal cues of hunger, fullness, and satisfaction, rather than external rules or restrictions.
Life-Enhancing Movement – Promote enjoyable, accessible movement that supports physical and mental health rather than exercise solely for weight control or aesthetic goals.
