Nutrition Education for Teams

SBSN recognizes that nutrition can be the key differentiator between winning and losing. However, we also understand that sports nutrition can often feel overwhelming, confusing, and rooted in rigid rules that can contribute to disordered eating behaviors.

HAES and Weight Inclusivity Nutrition Support for Teams

By working with one of Side By Side’s sports nutritionists, experts in eating disorder prevention, detection, and treatment, your team can optimize performance and maintain healthy relationships with food and body. We can:

  • Simplify the fundamentals of sports nutrition.

  • Focus on promoting long-term health, well-being, and sustained performance.

  • Provide practical goals to create a plan for nutrition around training, game day, and recovery.

Sports Nutrition for Coaches

Coaches and trainers play a vital and influential role in shaping the beliefs, behaviors, and values of their athletes—often with a lasting impact, both intentional and unintentional. While this role can bring immense joy and fulfillment, it can also create uncertainty, particularly in navigating how to support athletes in an era dominated by diet culture.

Our sports nutrition training program for coaches:

  • Outlines key principles of sports nutrition

  • Provides essential strategies for fostering a weight-neutral, supportive environment for athletes

  • Promotes healthy fueling while reducing the risk of disordered eating, injury, and performance setbacks

  • Highlights important red flags for disordered eating and provides clear steps to take if an athlete shows signs of an eating disorder

  • Empowers coaches to support their athletes with confidence and care

Weight-Inclusivity Nutrition Presentations and Training for Teams and Coaches

A dietitian on our team will provide HAES  and weight-inclusivity nutrition presentations and training. This covers the following areas:

Body Acceptance and Intuitive Eating:

  • We encourage team members to respect their bodies at any size, promote self-compassion, and recognize that all bodies deserve care and respect.

  • We teach intuitive eating, which focuses on listening to hunger and fullness cues rather than dieting or restricting food.

Health Beyond Weight, Debunking Diet culture:

  • We challenge dieting trends. Many athletes may fall into the trap of restrictive diets, believing this leads to better performance, or to meet certain body expectations. We will explain why extreme dieting or unhealthy habits can hinder performance and long-term health.

  • We teach that health is multi-dimensional and not solely defined by body weight or appearance.

  • We educate the team about the harmful effects of dieting and restrictive eating, and we promote a mindset that values sustainability, balance, and flexibility with food.

  • We challenge the traditional narrative that weight loss is necessary for better health.

  • We show that various body types can be healthy and competitive for sports, and we focus on respecting and accepting different body types and how athletes’ bodies can differ in function even when they look different externally.

Supporting Diverse Health Goals:

  • We help team members set non-weight-related goals that focus on improving their health behaviors (e.g., increasing energy levels, building strength, improving mental health) without the pressure of weight loss.

  • We emphasize non-judgmental support for all health goals and focus on long-term lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.

Creating a Positive Team Environment:

  • We encourage collaboration and support within the team for healthier food choices, physical activity, and mental well-being, while honoring personal preferences and choices.

  • We create a safe, body-positive environment where athletes and coaches talk about body image, eating struggles, or performance anxieties in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

  • Teams can develop a culture where supporting each other’s health and well-being is prioritized over weight or appearance-focused goals.

Addressing Health Inequities in Nutrition and Medical Care:

As HAES dietitians, we recognize and address the social and structural barriers that affect access to healthy food, physical activity, and healthcare, particularly for marginalized groups. We promote advocacy for inclusivity in healthcare and other systems.

By adopting a HAES framework, we help teams shift from a focus on weight loss to a broader, more inclusive understanding of health that respects the diversity of each athlete.
