ARE DIETITIANS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Thanks to changes in healthcare regulations, the majority of insurance plans cover medical nutrition therapy. So, you might be able to get your nutrition care at no cost to you!

Some private healthcare insurance plans cover dietitian services. And federal healthcare plans cover some dietitian nutritionist costs. Keep in mind, no insurance plans cover visits with nutritionists. “Nutritionist” is not a regulated title and, technically, not a healthcare professional. It’s important to confirm coverage with your healthcare provider, as all plans are different.

Not sure what to ask?

follow this insurance script to determine the coverage of your plan:

  • Is nutrition counseling covered? (you can find the billing codes to give to insurance in our intake paperwork we will send you after scheduling your initial appointment)

  • Are there any restricted diagnoses? (ask specifically about the diagnosis code Z71.3 and if its covered as preventive)

  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?

  • Is nutrition counseling covered when provided via telehealth?

  • How many visits are covered?

  • Do I have a deductible to meet before insurance pays?

  • Will I have a copay or coinsurance?

  • Is Your Happy Healthy DBA Side By Side Nutrition (NPI 1083197503) covered under my plan? If not, what are my out-of network nutrition benefits?

  • Write down the date and reference number for your call.
