Initial Session

60 minutes

During the initial session, we will do a full assessment to get to know you and your individual needs and welcome any questions you may have about our work together. With your permission (and depending on your comfort level), we will start to explore your past and present relationship with food, body image, health history, and so much more.

Together, we will discuss the type of support you need, both short- and long-term goals, and what you are hoping to get out of our work together.

Follow up Sessions

50 min

Follow-up sessions are where most of our work takes place. Together, we will thoroughly explore your relationship with food and body. We will unpack challenges and work together to develop individualized tools, explore body image, dismantle the food and body shame from external factors, and create structure if necessary to help you increase variety and flexibility with eating as you learn how to respond to your body’s hunger and satiety cues.

Together, we will support you through the inevitable ups and downs of your journey as you navigate through the discomfort, and celebrate your progress to cross the finish line with you.

$27/group session
(*8-week commitment required)

Virtual via Zoom

  • Who the group is for? Teens in recovery

  • What to expect? Participants can expect to gain an understanding of various recovery-related topics and identify the connection between this and their recovery process. The overall outcomes throughout the weeks are that individuals gain awareness around their experiences and ED behaviors, discuss struggles and receive support from peers, work together in an interactive way with peers to explore and gain insight into multiple topics, learn and understand nutrition in a way that empowers them to decide how they can engage healthfully in the individual and social eating experiences, and begin to challenge beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors towards food so they can begin to develop a healthier relationship with food.

  • To apply for the group, submit your application through the form block at the bottom of this page! Upon submitting your application, the facilitator of the group will reach out to you to set up a 15-minute phone call to answer any questions you may have and make sure the group is a good fit!

FAQ

What does a typical session look like?

Sessions are highly individualized and change from week to week. Our dietitians are constantly assessing the needs, progress, safety, and next steps with their clients end goals in mind.

How frequently will we be meeting?

Our dietitians typically see our clients weekly. However, this is something that we will assess during the initial consultation.

How do I choose a dietitian that is right for me?

Choosing a dietitian can be very difficult so show yourself a lot of self-compassion and grace in the process.  Check to make sure that the dietitian has experience in the specific area you are looking for. This is especially important for the treatment of eating disorders. To find out more about our dietitian’s experience, check out the “About” page. Another very important factor to consider is how you feel about the dietitian. The dietitian needs to be a good fit for you. Working with your dietitian, you should feel heard, safe, and comfortable. Research shows that a positive relationship with your clinician is one of the most predictive factors of success so it is important that you like the clinician you are working with. Be choosy, shop around, and trust your instincts. Prior to requesting an appointment, we offer 15 minute free clarity calls so that you can get a feel for your clinician and ask any questions you may have.

I don’t live in Colorado, can we still work together?

Absolutely! We are passionate about making care accessible for you and offer telehealth services when appropriate. We will meet via video conference and communicate between sessions using email.

How do I get started?

Schedule a free clarity call to get started. In that time, we can answer any questions you may have, see if we are a good fit for each other, and walk you through how to get started. If you already know you would like to book the initial consultation, feel free to email us at contact@sidebysidenutrition.com or call us at 708-717-7394.

I am putting together my treatment team. Who do I need on my treatment team? What is the role of the dietitian?

What level of care do I need?

Our dietitians can help you assess the level of care that you need to treat your eating disorder. We are an outpatient practice. “At the outpatient level of care, the individual lives at home and attends weekly sessions at the office of the provider. The individual is medically stable and has fair to good motivation for recovery. Eating disorder behaviors are well-managed and the individual is self-sufficient in meeting nutritional needs. The outpatient treatment team should include a psychologist/therapist, registered dietitian, primary care physician, psychiatrist, and family therapist. The outpatient providers should be specialized in eating disorder treatment and work collaboratively with one another.” - source

What questions should I ask when searching for an outpatient provider?

  • Are you accepting new patients? When is your first availability?

  • How much experience have you had working with eating disorders?

  • What percentage of your practice is devoted to people with eating disorders?

  • What do you charge for a session? Do you offer a sliding scale rate? If not, will you provide a receipt for out of network reimbursement?

  • Do you take insurance? If so, which plans? Do you accept Medicare/Medicaid

  • How are family members included in the treatment process? If a minor, what role you believe family members should play?

  • How are individual treatment goals and objectives determined?

  • How do you define recovery and incorporate this philosophy into your treatment approach?

  • Do you work with a treatment team?

  • What medical information do you need? Will I need a medical evaluation before entering your care?

  • How often will we be meeting? Do you have availability to increase frequency of appointments, if necessary?

I think I or a loved one may have an eating disorder, what are the common signs and symptoms?

What is Family Based Treatment (FBT)?

FBT is an evidence-based treatment and first line treatment for adolescents with eating disorders. It’s an empowerment model that supports families and caregivers re-nourish their child towards recovery. A dietitian works within a treatment team with a therapist, physician, and other providers to monitor physical and mental health. The team can assess if FBT is appropriate for the family and support progress through the three phases of FBT. Research has shown that adolescents who receive FBT recover at a higher rate than adolescents who receive individual therapy.
