Katie Grubiak

(she/her/hers)

Katie is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who graduated from the Coordinated Program in Dietetics at The University of Texas at Austin. She first pursued a career in public health nutrition in San Diego and Los Angeles with a maternal-child focus while surrounding herself with different cultures and a mission to honor all those seeking healthcare-competent and compassionate nutritional support.

It was in the same underprivileged area of Los Angeles where she was serving nutritionally that she began to offer her other passion to the community, teaching dance at a foundation called everybody dance! which was awarded by First Lady Michelle Obama the National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award. Working as a dietitian in public health clinics led naturally to this position of community dance educator with an emphasis on health promotion, nutrition education, and community clinic access to dancers and their families.

Katie was introduced to and initially trained in Family Based Treatment (FBT) by FBT Therapist Charlotte Thomas, LCSW. She continued evolving her work in FBT by collaborating with FBT Therapist Dr. Lauren Muhlheim from Eating Disorder Therapy LA, ultimately developing a unique and effective style of FBT-informed care practice.

In addition to being a supervisor for SBSN dietitians and as a master trainer, Katie is also passing on her style of FBT-informed care to other dietitians nationally and internationally through co-leading a course through EDRD Pro. She is also a contributing clinician in the development, testing, and training of the new Recovery Record Family App which will allow clinicians to more effectively provide in-between session support to families working within FBT.

In addition, Katie was the Dietitian at Optimum Performance Institute (OPI) in Woodland Hills, California which specializes in DBT focused residential treatment for young adults with Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, and co-occurring issues such as eating disorders. Besides individual nutritional counseling specifically to support eating disorder recovery, Katie taught the Restorative Movement Group and the Nutritional Balance Group at OPI.

Katie's overall style of nutritional practice includes honoring and supporting clients on their journeys to find deep nourishment and peace on all levels. In individual sessions, she guides her clients ultimately to build a nutritive relationship with food and body through sensation, metaphor, intuition, and self-compassion.  When not supporting clients nutritionally through recovery, you will find her teaching or taking a dance or yoga class where her wholehearted belief in cultivating compassionate embodiment continues.
