MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY FOR RUNNERS WITH ANOREXIA, BULIMIA, OSFED, AND DISORDERED EATING:

For individuals specifically dealing with an eating disorder as a runner, a dietitian specializing in this field plays a crucial role in providing support and guidance. The primary responsibilities include:

  • Personalized Counseling: Customize counseling for individuals with Anorexia Athletica, considering the unique challenges of both eating disorders and athletics.

  • Assessment and Customization: This includes a comprehensive evaluation of the runner's medical, psychological, and dietary history. We assess current nutritional intake and exercise habits. We identify nutritional deficiencies and energy balance. We consider factors such as the intensity and duration of training sessions, the intricacies of runners' routines, and individual health objectives. Our focus is on overall health to develop individualized nutrition plans.

  • Sport-Specific Adjustments: As sports nutritionists, we adapt nutrition strategies to meet the specific demands of different sports and athletic activities.

  • Energy Balance Maintenance: Runners, to optimize performance, must ensure adequate caloric intake, balanced macronutrient distribution tailored for training demands, and micronutrient-rich foods to address deficiencies. We advocate for a diverse diet rich in essential nutrients to prevent common deficiencies associated with Anorexia Athletica.

  • Meal Planning and Timing: As expert sports nutritionists, we help runners with personalized meal plans that align with training schedules, with an emphasis on pre- and post-sport nutrition to optimize performance and recovery. We also help runners regulate their eating patterns to prevent binge eating.

  • Hydration Strategies: We assess and provide guidelines for adequate fluid intake based on individual needs and exercise intensity. We help runners identify signs of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, incorporating electrolyte-rich beverages as needed.

  • Emotional Support: We provide compassionate support and implement behavioral interventions to address disordered eating patterns and promote a positive relationship with food and body image.

  • Long-Term Health and Recovery Promotion: We work with runners towards sustained health, injury prevention, and addressing nutritional imbalances to support long-term recovery.

  • Monitoring and Follow-Up: Ongoing assessment and regular follow-up appointments are necessary to track progress and adjust the plan as necessary. This also includes a comprehensive approach, as we coordinate with healthcare providers, coaches, and support systems.

Overall, the role of a dietitian in treating an eating disorder in runners is comprehensive, involving a combination of nutritional expertise, personalized counseling, and support to address both the physical and emotional aspects of the condition.

Dietitian for ED and Medical Nutrition Therapy FAQ

What sport has the highest rate of eating disorders?

Sports that prioritize weight or appearance, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and wrestling, often have higher rates of eating disorders. However, the prevalence can vary among individuals and sports.

Is it normal for runners to be underweight?

It's not "normal" or healthy for runners to be underweight. While some runners may naturally have lower body weights due to factors like genetics and body composition, being underweight can have detrimental effects on health and performance.

Is it normal to eat a lot as a runner?

Runners often have increased energy needs due to the calories burned during training and exercise. It's normal for runners to eat more to fuel their workouts and support recovery, but it's essential to maintain a balanced diet to meet nutritional needs.

Why is undereating bad for athletes?

Undereating can negatively impact athletes' health and performance by leading to nutrient deficiencies, decreased energy levels, impaired recovery, increased injury risk, and decreased athletic performance.

Why do athletes eat differently?

Athletes have unique nutritional needs based on factors such as training intensity, duration, and individual metabolism. They often require more calories, protein, and other nutrients to support energy expenditure, muscle repair, and recovery.

What percentage of athletes do not eat enough?

The percentage of athletes who do not eat enough can vary depending on factors such as sport, gender, and individual circumstances. Some athletes may struggle with inadequate calorie intake due to disordered eating behaviors or unintentional underfueling.

Should runners with eating disorders stop running?

It depends on the severity of the eating disorder and its impact on the individual's health and well-being. In some cases, medical professionals may recommend modifying exercise routines, including running, to prioritize recovery and avoid exacerbating health complications. It is important to work with a treatment team including a registered dietitian who can help support nutrition requirements and exercise.

How to keep running with an eating disorder:

Individuals with eating disorders should work closely with healthcare professionals, including dietitians and therapists, to develop a safe and sustainable approach to running while prioritizing recovery. This may involve establishing a balanced eating plan, monitoring energy levels and performance, and addressing any psychological challenges related to exercise and body image.

What insurance plans do you accept?

Side By Side Nutrition is in network with Cigna, Cigna Localplus, Aetna, BlueCross Blue Shield (Anthem/Regence), UMR, and United Healthcare. Prior to your visit, please call your insurance company to check your benefits. We can not guarantee coverage. For other insurance companies, we are out-of-network providers. This means we can provide you a superbill to submit to insurance for possible reimbursement. SBS can not submit superbills without a medical diagnosis. Payment is due at time of service for folxs using out of network benefits.

How does treatment work? What does a typical session look like?

Sessions are highly individualized and change from week to week. Our dietitians are constantly assessing the needs, progress, safety, and next steps with their client’s end goals in mind.

We work at an outpatient level of care for the treatment of eating disorders. An outpatient team consists of a dietitian, therapist, primary care physician and psychiatrist at minimum.

An outpatient team works collaboratively to ensure clients get the best care for their recovery while staying in their day to day life. Clients in eating disorder recovery being treated on the outpatient level will typically visit with their dietitians 1-2x/week, therapist 1-2x/week, PCP monthly, and psychiatrist as needed.

I don’t live in Colorado, can we still work together?

Absolutely! We are passionate about making care accessible for you and offer telehealth services and online nutrition therapy when appropriate. We will meet via a HIPAA-compliant video conference platform and communicate between sessions using email.

We provide nutrition counseling to clients from around the county.
